Thin Places

  Iona pilgrimage

On Friday, Oct. 22, I will board a plane to Glasgow, Scotland. This will launch a journey into the wilderness of pilgrimage to listen for God speaking to my heart. These opening words of the call to prayer speak to God’s desire to be with me on pilgrimage. I go in response to my longing for that conversation with the One who seeks me. In the wilderness of the Isle of Iona and the company of the Iona Community I will live into the daily rhythms of prayer, work and community. This wilderness has called me before but I never know how God will meet me there. After Iona, I will head off into a new wilderness. On the tidal Island of Lindisfarne in northeastern England I will walk the way of St. Cuthbert and generations of pilgrims. Like Iona, Lindesfarne is a thin place where the distance between heaven and earth is but a veil. Where is your wilderness? Is God wooing you to a new conversation? Let’s share the journey. Come along with me.

“Thin places,” the Celts called this space,
Both seen and unseen,
Where the door between this world
And the next is cracked open for a moment
And the light is not all on the other side.
